Zines
Zine-making is a brief and intimate opportunity to communicate about any subject in the form of a small book — a window into one’s voice. Zine is short for magazine or fanzine and is the original self-publishing used by a range of subcultures and marginalized communities. From science fiction to poetry to politics, zines are a visual conversation that anyone can have about anything. The process of zine making allows us to quickly respond to the world around us through creative reflection and visual narratives.
PUT A TONGUE ON IT
Lick on My Loves- A zine about solutions done on joss papers as an offering to our holy ancestors whose erotic moments we have to thank for our existence. 2022
The Light
A Zine created for LA Philharmonic Sound & Stage Pandemic Program as the family activity for director Gustav Dudamel’s collaboration with Common on his song The Light. I focused visuals on the chorus ‘There are times when you’ll need someone, I will be by your side…’ 2021
Colonial Sludge
A discovery zine created with guest artist LA Librarian Yago Cura during Saddlleback College's Pandemic Programming. I chose to respond to a random page from a Thomas Guide Map from San Diego, California. I focused on following the lines of waterways and tracing our local history of Spanish colonialism in the names of streets and neighborhoods. The growth of civilizations around waterway cities and the finite nature of this precious resource has been a source of inspiration since childhood. The last page highlights the street name El Escorial which translates to industrial sludge, so the title became colonial sludge. Toxic, insidious and omnipresent. 2020
Art21-Caí Guo Qang
A zine made to demonstrate how to visually summarize a video segment on an arist from CBS Art 21 Series. Visual notes were drawn during Caí Guo Qang’s video and included quotes and sketches from highlighted artworks. The segment title is used as the zine title and his artworks titles accompany each work that was selected. 2020
Quarantzine
A Zine made to demonstrate how to select themes from quarantine living during Saddlback College’s Emergency Pandemic Programming. Like most pets my hens were surprised by the increase in my company and the relationships we developed were quite special. Printed on Saddleback’s new RISOgraph machine using two colors and the scanner bed’s capacity for copying traditional analog drawings. 2020
