Drawing

Emphasizes the development of perceptual and technical skills in drawing. Includes line, shape, proportion, value, and composition in the representation of still life and other subject matter using dry media.

PROJECTS

three paper strips

Students describe curved planes using value and overlapping to create an illusion of space and depth, constructing a still life using three strips of different values of paper.

DRAPERY STILL LIFE

Students create, light and record a still life including at least two types of folds, including pipe, zigzag, half lock, drop, spiral and diaper folds.

ONE SKULL, THREE VIEWS

An exercise in line weight and contour in which students overlap three drawings of an object as it rotates between each drawing.

SYMMETRY & TRANSPARENCY

Students create a still life by collecting at least four objects of varying sizes, including one symmetrical transparent or glass object, one symmetrical opaque mug, one box or cube and one spherical object. After creating a construction drawing of the vertical axis, accurate ellipses and relative proportion, the image is transferred to toned paper with charcoal before being completed.

NEGATIVE SPACE PLANTS

An exploration in negative space and organic forms in which students describe the details of plant contour and negative space in complex arrangements while learning to engage with the edges of the format.
