Foundations of Art

An introduction to the fundamentals of visual arts through the exploration of various materials, techniques, concepts and forms of critique. Emphasizes fundamental art ideas, modes, devices, problems of organization and structure, terminology, media and the relationship of art to society. Historical and contemporary art and artists will be analyzed for their cultural impact. Relevant terminology will be used while general techniques for various media are explored.

Painting & Color Portrait

A study in portraiture and color theory in which students use a limited color palette from complementary or analogous colors, students discover the range of values possible by identifying the tints, tones and shades that will best reflect their portrait of a chosen person of significance.

Drawing & Contrast

Students design an intentional composition using an original set of shapes that are inspired by drawings and reference photos of California flora and fauna by developing positive and negative shapes, abstracting them into non-representational designs throughout the creative process.

Response Zine: Line, Color & Collage

Students create a zine made from a single sheet of blank printer paper to demonstrate their understanding of the elements of line and drawing to summarize and describe their selected artists' works.

salvaged education

A critical, visual response to the One Book One College shared reading selection for 2020, ‘Educated’ by Tara Westover. Students utilize text and symbols selected from the reading to express themes of education, equity, access and mental health during the onset of the pandemic.
