Art 60: Printmaking I
Designed to introduce students to a variety of processes involving relief and intaglio printmaking. Processes of risograph, serigraph, etching, aquatint, drypoint, linoleum/woodcut, collagraph and monotypes are explored. Both traditional and experimental approaches important to the development of a print are used throughout the course of study. Each project engages the creative process including: ideation, revision, execution and exhibition by developing an image from an original idea, applying various technical processes, printing an edition and submitting prints to critique, competition or exhibition.
PROJECTS
RISOGraph
Students use a RISOgraph printer to design either analog or digital images that utilize the machines capacity for transparency and layering to explore secondary colors and value ranges. Paper color variations and exploration in multi-drum usage are the projects main objectives which build familiarity with the equipment.
linoleum Relief FOUR LETTER WORD
Students produce a linocut print from an original design incorporating a four letter word of their choosing. In the design process students are to avoid conceptual redundancy in their choice of image and text. The combined use of negative space and variation in line quality are applied as sources of value and descriptors of light logic. Chine colle is applied to create emphasis using contrasting color.
TWO-PLATE LINOLEUM Relief
Students further develop relief printing skills and understanding of registration by designing an image that uses two plates and colors. Gradients are introduced using blended roll techniques and exploration of color combinations are prioritized learning objectives.
DRYPOINT Intaglio
Students demonstrate intaglio printmaking using plexiglass and a metal scribe or whistlers needle to etch their linework. Hatching is used to increase the value range and build compositional emphasis and balance.
Serigraph Silkscreen
Students create original analog or digital imagery for exposure to silkscreens, planning of registration printing single or multicolored designs.
Print exchanges
Loteria Print Exchange
Students use serigraph/silkscreen to create an edition for exchange of lotería themed playing cards and game boards.
Ukiyoe-Floating World Print Exchange
Students participated in a print exchange project with the theme of ‘Floating World,’ inspired by the Ukiyoe style of Japanese printmaking.
